Internet Drugs Cause Woman to Lose Her Vision
Posted December 18th, 2006The 64-year-old woman has lost her vision after taking oral steroids that she bought over the Internet.
The woman said she had been buying the drugs from a source in Thailand because she thought she suffered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. She diagnosed herself, then went online to buy the steroids on the advice of a neighbor.
After becoming aware that she was suffering vision loss, she visited an ophthalmologist who diagnosed her with cataracts and glaucoma. She had had no previous difficulty with her vision and no family history of cataracts or glaucoma. The ophthalmologist came to the conclusion that her blindness had been caused by incorrect use of the medication.
Doctors say that self-diagnosing and then buying drugs over the Internet is dangerous for several reasons. Even if the online supplier sends the correct drug, which is not guaranteed, patients must be monitored for serious side effects and other complications with steroid drugs. Side effects can include diabetes, bone loss and eye problems.
