Bank scam targets South Dakota residents

Posted December 15th, 2006

During the recent holiday season, fifteen customers of a bank in South Dakota were victims of a bank scam. The customers were tricked into giving away personal information to a person pretending to work for their bank, the Associated Press reported.

Customers received calls from a person who claimed to be from the bank’s quality control department, and had noticed strange withdrawals from the customer’s accounts. The person then asked the customers to read the numbers from their checks so the bank could credit their accounts for the “stolen” money. The bank caught the scheme before any money was actually stolen.

The Rapid City Journal also reports that the Better Business Bureau has traced the call to an apartment in Morrisonville, NY. The BBB says that banks do not ask for account information over the Internet or telephone because they already have your information. If you think you have been a victim of a scam, contact your bank immediately and contact the BBB at 1-800-649-6814.
