ACB Offers Accessible Currency Petition

Posted April 17th, 2007

The American Council of the Blind has created an online petition in response to a US Treasury Department decision about accessible currency. The petition is directed at the US Congress. To date, there are 6,159 signatories.

"We, the undersigned blind and visually impaired individuals, or supporters thereof, are dismayed and frustrated by the decision of the U.S. Department of the Treasury to appeal the decision to create accessible paper currency," the petition begins.

Judge James Robertson in the federal district court in the District of Columbia had rendered a decision requiring the Treasury Department to formulate a plan for creating paper currency that can be distinguished by feel. The Treasury Department’s response was to appeal the decision, saying the idea is impractical and unnecessary, despite the fact that more than 100 other countries have already created such currency.
