Catching Bad Guys

Sacha van Loo is an officer in the Belgian Federal Police. A story in the International Herald Tribune reports that this blind police officer is a powerful weapon in counteracting organized crime and terror.

Van Loo has the talent of hearing. His highly-trained ears can tell the make of the car a suspect is driving. He can tell the location of a person from the echo off a wall. And he can even tell the phone number being dialed from the tones the phone makes. To top it off, he does this from wiretapped recordings which are characteristically unclear.

In addition to being a skillful listener, van Loo is an accomplished linguist. He speaks seven languages—Arabic is one—and can tell many different accents apart, as well. When the Belgian police were desperately working to identify a drug smuggler from a wiretap, they decided he was Moroccan. After van Loo listened to the recording, he deduced that the smuggler was Albanian. It turned out Van Loo was right.
