Diet Linked With Macular Degeneration

Posted June 2nd, 2006

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is expected to impair the vision of three million people in Australia, North America and Western Europe by the year 2020, according to a report in Medscape Today. Though there is no effective cure for AMD, which typically affects primarily the older population, researchers are discovering a link between maintaining healthy vision and the consumption of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Researches are pursuing the hypothesis that micronutrient antioxidants can protect against the onset of AMD. Taking supplements of the mineral zinc also may prove to stave off the disease, according to some recent research. For more information, go online to www.medscape.com
