Catching Vision Loss

Posted April 7th, 2008

Concerned that an elderly friend or loved one is experiencing vision loss? The Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) lists signs of vision loss to watch for, including:
• increased sensitivity to light and glare
• More clumsiness than usual
• Reduced night vision
• Difficulty recognizing faces

Certain behavior changes in older people may also indicate vision loss, such as avoiding social interaction that they used to love or avoiding activities they used to enjoy, like playing board games or reading.

Vision loss should not be ignored in older people. As CNIB makes clear, vision loss due to eye diseases is preventable and treatable for all segments of the population, including the elderly.
