Help in the Kitchen

Posted August 6th, 2008

When low-vision sets in, cooking can be a challenge. Lighthouse.org offers these tips for making the kitchen easier to navigate for people with low vision.

  • To distinguish between similar containers place a rubber band around one.
  • Timers don’t only announce when food is finished cooking. They can also remind the cook to turn off the stove or oven.
  • The cook’s ears can alert him or her to when foods are almost done. For example, as liquids boil bubbling gets louder and stronger. The popping sound of frying food can mean it is browning.
  • Make sure to double check which spice is being added to a dish by smelling it. The wrong spice can completely alter a recipe!
