Target to Improve Web Site’s Accessibility

Posted September 18th, 2008

Internet shopping will continue to become more and more accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired, the Target Corporation announced on Aug. 27. Upon settling a class action suit brought against Target by the National Federation of the Blind, the retail chain agreed to make its Web site more easily accessible to people with vision problems.

The suit was brought against Target in 2006, and after two years of litigation the company has promised to update its Internet store by early 2009. According to the American Foundation for the Blind, the improvements are simple ones, such as making sure links and graphics are adequately labeled. In addition, Target will also establish a $6 million fund from which California-based plaintiffs can make claims. The NFB will follow up on Target’s improved accessibility by certifying its Nonvisual Accessibility Web Certification program.
