Preventing Vision Loss Due to Diabetes

Posted February 17th, 2010

Most vision loss due to diabetes can be prevented, but it is vital that it be diagnosed early, according to a recent report issued by the Pennsylvania Association of the Blind. The report urges people with diabetes to pay close attention to their vision. Blurry vision, floaters or dark spots, straight lines—such as flag poles or street lights—appearing not to be straight, difficulty seeing in dim light, or decreased peripheral vision are reasons to see an eye doctor immediately.

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when increased pressure damages the small blood vessels of the eye. Annual eye exams by an ophthalmologist should include pupil dilation, which allows the doctor to check the eye’s blood vessels for damage. Maintaining normal blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels reduces the likelihood of damage occurring to the eye’s small blood vessels.
