Living Well With Macular Degeneration

Posted March 21st, 2012

Though macular degeneration may create challenges, attention to a few details will help keep life on course. For example, the American Federation for the Blind recommends:

  • Don’t become socially isolated. Join a support group. Call a friend or a family member. Continue to get out and enjoy life.
  • Home lighting is important. Good lights, well placed, make a huge difference.
  • The floor of your home is important. Eliminate throw rugs. Be careful about furniture with sharp corners. You should not have to worry about being injured in your own home.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. If you’re a woman, ditch the high heels. They can catch on stairs, curbs, and sidewalk cracks and grates. Shoes need to be comfortable, fit well, and provide proper support. And they can still look good—even if they are not high heels.
