“Be on guard. Stand true to what you believe. Be courageous. Be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13

My values determine the outcome of many events in my life. If my values have such a large impact on my life, I need to decide what I value. When I have a strong set of values, I need to remember to practice them in my daily life.

Paul wandered from one end of the value spectrum to the other. He watched as Stephen was stoned to death, and supported the effort to persecute the first Christians. But after his Damascus Road experience, all his values changed, and he determined to put everything aside except “Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”  Paul’s new priority drove his whole life from that point on. My verse today helped me remember not only how intentional I need to be in living my values, but also how challenging it can be to stick to those values.

1 Corinthians 16:13 says four things to me:

 1. Be on guard. It's not easy staying focused. There are many distractions (some are even good things) that can keep me from the best things.

2. Stand true to what you believe. Like Daniel, I need to have “purpose in my heart.” I need to decide what is most important and then focus on that above everything else.

3. Be courageous. Establishing my life on what is most important will not always be viewed positively by others. Some people will not understand or agree with me. But if it's important, then it's worth it.

4. Be strong. Sometimes I have to say no, even to good things if they distract me from the best things. I have to set boundaries to guard what is most important. I have to take the time—like exercising to strengthen my muscles—to strengthen my resolve to “know nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”  With focus comes assurance from God: “I will strengthen you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.”

It worked for Paul. I recommend it to you. Uphold your values and look to God for strength.
