"My soul finds rest in God alone." Psalm 62:1

Posted June 19th, 2006

In the previous devotional, I talked about "steadfastness." This morning I see "single-mindedness" as the hint-for-the-day in my ongoing quest to identify and retain my relationship with the Father. It seemed as I read Psalm 62 today that I had to slow down on this theme. In this psalm we read:

1.    My soul finds rest in God alone.

2.    He alone is my rock.

3.    He alone is my salvation.

4.    Trust in Him at all times.

5.    One thing God has spoken.

Here's my current "ah-ha": maybe the battle isn't so much with sin in my life as it is just being distracted. I like the idea that I don't have to focus on getting rid of sin in my life, because sin will self-destruct if my focus is on Jesus alone.

The exception in the chapter to this "uni-focus" is my other "ah-ha" to share with you: "One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard (says David): that you, O God, are strong, and that you, O Lord, are loving" (Psalm 62:11).

Wow, imagine what could happen to my life if I had a single-mindedness toward God like that, hearing just two things from His single-minded focus on me: that He is strong and that He is loving! A focus like that will bring me rest in Him, a rock-solid foundation in Him, assurance of salvation in Him, and a confident trust in Him. I believe He's doing and will do the same for you. My prayer is that we all discover the value of that single-minded focus on Jesus even more today.
