“Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness…” Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

One of the most famous texts in the Sermon on the Mount has, unfortunately in my experience, been used with a focus on the last half of the verse more than the first:
First half of verse: “Seek first his kingdom and HIS righteousness”
Second half of verse: “And all these things will be given to you as well.”
For me, the focus was, too often, on getting things, rather than seeking him! And the “things” usually implied material wealth, possessions. It was like a blank check for my self-centered and selfish heart to fill in. It was like all pleasure and desire would be instantly fulfilled if I sought Him. But I finally had to ask myself, What is the “all” that will be mine if I seek first His kingdom and His righteousness?
The best place to look for answers in God’s Word is in the context of the verses I am trying to understand. Immediately preceding the “Seek first,” is not a declaration of a free shopping spree but rather a challenge given by Jesus not to worry about three things. I am not to worry about what I will eat, what I will drink, and what I will wear: Don’t worry about your food… look at the birds of the air. Don’t worry about your clothes… look at the lilies of the field. God takes care of them; won’t He take care of you too (see Matt. 6:25-32)?
So, Jesus’ conclusion is: don’t worry about food, drink, and clothes—that’s what the pagans worry about. He already knows what I need before I ask Him. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added as well. God is going to take care of my basic needs as I am seeking Him and His righteousness. No guarantees of a new car, a great job, a large bank account or even life itself—just an assurance that God will take care of me.
